Bone Augmentation
In case of reduced bone material, augmentation takes place with artificial or own bone material. Bone augmentation serves to restore lost bone volume. After tooth extraction, massive bone deterioration often sets in within a few months up to several years. Closing this gap after tooth extraction is often not possible without bone augmentation.
There are different augmentation methods. We distinguish between simultaneous and previous augmentation.
Simultaneous Augmentation
Simultaneous implantation and augmentation can be considered for relatively small bone defects. Augmentation mainly takes place with artificial bone material, which bonds within six to twelve months with your own bone material. The use of artificial bone material saves the removal of own bone material and avoids a second lesion.
Previous Augmentation
Previous augmentation is required in case of larger bone defects. We use your own bone material for this purpose. Preferably, this is removed in the retromolar region (behind the last tooth in the lower jaw) or in the chin region. Bone removal outside the mouth region is only required in case of extremely advanced bone defects. In these cases, the bone material is usually taken from the iliac crest region.
With previous augmentation, the implant can first be inserted after six moths. The structure first has to bond with the jawbone. The disadvantages of pre-augmentation are first of all the increased number of surgical interventions. Secondly, you have to deal with a second lesion at the removal site.
