Sinus lift
A sinus lift or sinus augmentation is a special kind of bone augmentation.
The air-filled sinus cavity is located directly in the proximity of the molar roots in the upper jaw. After tooth extraction, bone deterioration often sets in. The thickness of the bone between the oral and the sinus cavity reduces. In case of severe bone deterioration, it may not be possible to set an implant or only under aggravated conditions. As a result, the sinus cavity floor must be raised by means of bone augmentation to provide enough space for an implant.
Procedure
The oral mucosa is detached from the bone under local anaesthesia. In the second step, the jawbone is drilled and the sinus cavity mucus membrane carefully detached.
The cavity created by lifting the oral mucosa is filled with artificial or own bone material and covered with a membrane. At the end of the surgery, the oral mucosa is returned to its original position and fixed with stitches.
If it is not necessary to augment a lot of the bone material, the implant can be set at the same time as the sinus lift. With larger augmentations, the implant is first set after six months.
