Root Tip Resection
If the examination and the x-ray diagnosis show a cyst or inflammation in the area around the root tip of a tooth, root tip resection (removal of the root tip) is one possibility to preserve this tooth.
The Surgery
The bone above the root tip is exposed under local anaesthesia by cutting through the gum tissue. In the area of the root tip, the bone is removed using a bur and the root tip as well as the inflamed tissue extracted. In most cases, the root cavity is filled some time prior to surgery.
In addition, the root canal can be filled starting from the tip. The after-effects of this surgery may be swelling of the cheeks and lips, difficulty to open the mouth, difficulty swallowing and raised temperature. These after-effects usually subside within three to four days. The stitches can be removed after one week. The healing process takes approx. four weeks.
